South East Water

Contemplating the graphical qualities of the built environment along the Frankston foreshore

As part of the Graphic Dimensions studio for the Bachelor of Design (Communication Design) at RMIT University, I created a poster triptych to communicate a perceived dialogue between the South East Water building – a popular meeting spot for locals, and the activities performed on location to the public. To be pasted in situ, the triptych aims to engender and reinforce belonging.

SITE INVESTIGATION

Immersing myself in the location to gain an understanding of the site context

To begin this project, I investigated the South East Water building and surrounding Frankston foreshore through phone photography and texture rubbings. This rapid process helped me connect to the visual experience of the location, reflecting on how the architecture, people and natural phenomena affect each other to guide the conceptual and visual direction of graphical experiments without getting bogged down in ambiguity.

Below are some examples of these photos and rubbings. Each image is draggable on the screen to help communicate my playful and personal approach to observing the site.

GRAPHICAL EXPERIMENTATION

Interpreting my investigation of the site

I rapidly created design experiments. Each of these informed my understanding of the site, sequentially building up a graphical language to communicate the experience of being in the location on a pictorial surface.
